Riding a Scooter in Phuket: Tips for Beginners

Thailand drives on the left side of the road. If you're from a country that drives on the right, this will feel strange at first — especially at intersections and roundabouts. ## Start Slow If you've never ridden a scooter before, practice in a quiet parking lot or side street before hitting the main roads. Get comfortable with the brakes, throttle, and turning. ## Always Wear a Helmet It's the law in Thailand, and police do check. More importantly, it could save your life. We provide full-face helmets with every rental — use them. ## Watch for Sand and Gravel Phuket's roads can have patches of sand, especially near beaches and on hill roads after rain. Slow down on curves and avoid sudden braking on sandy surfaces. ## Be Visible Wear bright clothing and keep your headlight on at all times. Thai drivers may not always check their mirrors, so assume you're invisible until proven otherwise. ## Don't Drink and Ride This should go without saying, but alcohol is a factor in a huge percentage of motorcycle accidents in Thailand. If you're drinking, take a taxi.
